Best time for Bohol

Bohol is warm all year, so the real choice is between dry months, green months and the stretch late in the year when typhoons can pass. Here is how the seasons change the countryside day, and how long to stay.

PAGASA, the national weather service, splits the Philippine year into a dry season from December to May and a rainy season from June to November. Bohol follows that pattern, with a cooler, busier stretch from December to February and the hottest, calmest weeks from March to May.

This guide covers the best months, when the hills turn brown, typhoons and the 2026 outlook, how many days to plan, which part of Bohol to stay in, what things cost, safety advice, and the honest picture of 2026 tourism on the island.

The quick answer

March to May is the best time for dry weather and calm seas; December to February is cooler but busier. June to November brings more rain, and typhoons can pass from about October. Plan three to four days: one for the countryside tour, one for island hopping, the rest on the beach.

What month is best to go to Bohol?

March, April and May: the driest months, with the calmest seas for island hopping. December to February is cooler and busier; June to November is greener and wetter.

Every month works for the countryside tour, which runs by van and stops for an hour at most in one place. The month changes the light, the heat and what the sea does the next morning.

When are the Chocolate Hills brown?

In the dry season, mostly from about March to May, when the grass on the hills dries out. After the rains they turn green again.

The name comes from that colour. The 1,776 hills counted in the 1997 proclamation are covered in grass, and it browns as the dry months go on. Between the seasons the slopes are often patchy, part green and part brown; by the end of the rainy season they are green.

Rain does not spoil the view either. Julia reached the deck in a shower and wrote: "[...] you could still see the hills and the warm rain gave a mystical look to the scenery." (May 2026). Early morning and late afternoon give the softest light; the climb is about 214 steps either way. Our Chocolate Hills guide has the details.

Is it safe to visit Bohol in the rainy and typhoon season?

Yes, with an eye on the forecast. Typhoon risk is highest late in the year: Typhoon Odette hit Bohol in December 2021, and tours and the Loboc cruise pause when a storm is near.

Most rainy-season days bring a shower and then sun. The risk worth planning for is a tropical storm, which can stop boats and river activities for a day or two. In February 2026 the Loboc River cruise paused from 4 February for Tropical Depression Basyang, then picked up again.

For late 2026, PAGASA expects a strong El Niño from about October 2026 to January 2027, which usually means less rain than normal, and it still forecast one or two tropical cyclones for each of November and December 2026. The province activated its own El Niño action plan in June 2026.

How many days in Bohol is enough?

Three to four days. Two days is the minimum to fit the countryside tour and one island-hopping morning.

The countryside tour takes a full day: 6 to 10 hours from Panglao depending on the tour. Island hopping to the dolphins and Balicasag starts at sunrise and ends before lunch. Add a beach day, and three days fill up nicely.

StayHow to use it
2 daysDay 1 countryside tour; day 2 dolphins, Balicasag and Virgin Island, beach in the afternoon
3 daysAdd a free beach day on Panglao, or a spare day for weather
4 daysAdd Anda's quiet beaches or a slow day around Jagna and the east

Which part of Bohol is best to stay in?

Panglao, around Alona Beach, for most visitors: the beaches, the boats and the tour pickups are all there. Tagbilaran suits ferry days and budgets; Anda is quiet but far.

  • Panglao and Alona Beach. The island is joined to Tagbilaran by bridges and has the Bohol-Panglao International Airport. Countryside tours pick up at Panglao hotels or meet at points like McDonald's Alona, and island-hopping boats leave from its beaches.
  • Tagbilaran. The capital, and the port for the fast ferries from Cebu. Handy for an early or late boat, and several tours have a meeting point in town.
  • Anda. White beaches on the east coast, about 2.5 hours from Tagbilaran. Lovely for a slower second half of a trip, less so as a base for the countryside tour.

From Panglao, the drive to the Chocolate Hills takes about 1.5 hours, so the tours leave around 7:30 to 8:00.

Is Bohol expensive for tourists?

Not very. Shared countryside tours start from $26 on this site, plus about ₱500 in fees and ₱1,200 for the river lunch when the listing says they are paid on the day.

Bohol is a budget to mid-range destination. The biggest costs are the room and the flight; day trips are modest. Analysts in 2026 did note that Philippine four and five-star hotels price high next to Vietnam, so the top resorts are where a budget stretches most.

  • Countryside tours: from $26 for the budget day with a driver, $41 for the Panglao tour with coordinators, $38 for a private van.
  • On the day: about ₱500 in entrance and environmental fees and about ₱1,200 for the Loboc lunch, per the listings, on tours that do not include them. The DENR protected-area fee at the hills has been ₱100 for foreign visitors since December 2022, and around ₱100 to 150 has been reported at the complex.
  • Island hopping: the dolphin and Balicasag trip is from $37, plus a ₱500 environmental fee per the listing.

Bring pesos in small notes. Many stalls and add-ons take cash only.

Is Bohol safe for tourists?

Yes. Bohol is not under any regional travel warning from the US, UK or Canada; normal national precautions for the Philippines apply.

The US rates the Philippines as a whole at Level 2, "Exercise increased caution", with its higher levels for parts of Mindanao and the Sulu Sea; Bohol is not named. The UK advises against travel only to parts of Mindanao and the Sulu archipelago. Canada asks for a high degree of caution country-wide, with regional advisories for Mindanao.

On the ground, the things to plan for are ordinary ones: midday heat on the 214 steps, slippery paths after rain, sun on the boats, and a long road day. Drink water, wear shoes with grip, and cover shoulders and knees for the churches. At the tarsier sanctuary, quiet voices and no flash keep the animals calm.

Is Bohol losing tourists, and what problems does it face?

Arrivals fell in the first half of 2026, by nearly 22% on 2025, for reasons analysts link to the whole country, not to Bohol. The island's long-running issues are the protected hills, swine fever and storms.

The Bohol Provincial Tourism Office counted 637,288 arrivals from January to June 2026, against about 816,000 a year earlier. Analysts at C9 Hotelworks pointed to higher fuel prices and airfares, fewer low-cost routes and a softer Korean market, all national trends. The Bohol Association of Tour and Travel Operators reported strong growth from Europe and the US in the November to February high season. For context, Bohol hosted over a million tourists in 2023.

The other issues, in brief:

  • The Chocolate Hills. A resort built inside the protected area went viral and was shut in 2024, and House Bill 831, which would redraw the protected area, is still pending. In October 2026 the province, Carmen and DENR began reviewing fee collection and viewpoint management at the Chocolate Hills; no change for visitors has been announced.
  • African swine fever in hogs, which shapes the pork rules (see our Loboc River guide).
  • Storms and earthquakes: the 2013 earthquake and Typhoon Odette in 2021. The churches have been restored; Baclayon Church reopened after the 2013 earthquake and Loboc Church on 16 May 2021.
  • Marine tourism rules: Virgin Island reopened in February 2026 under new limits.
