Bohol countryside tour itinerary

One day, one van, and the best-known sights of inland Bohol in a loop: the Chocolate Hills, the tarsiers, the mahogany forest and the Loboc River. Here is how the day usually runs, what each stop is like, and how to fit it into two or four days on the island.

The countryside tour is the day almost every visitor to Bohol books. A van collects you in Panglao or Tagbilaran in the morning, and a guide or driver takes the group inland through farm villages and forest to the Chocolate Hills in Carmen, with the tarsiers, the man-made forest and the Loboc River on the way. You are back at your hotel by late afternoon.

The stops are fixed by geography, so most tours share them. What changes is the order, the number of extras (a church, a hanging bridge, a butterfly garden) and what sits inside the price. The planning work is short: pick the tour that matches how you like to travel, bring pesos for whatever the listing says is paid on the day, and leave the road, the tickets and the timing to the team.

The quick answer

A typical countryside tour from Panglao takes 6 to 10 hours, with pickup from about 7:30 AM. The usual loop: the Blood Compact shrine or Baclayon Church, the tarsier sanctuary, lunch by the Loboc River, the Bilar man-made forest and the Chocolate Hills, in an order that varies by operator. Most shared tours list entrance and environmental fees of about ₱500 and the river cruise lunch of about ₱1,200 as paid on the day, per the listings; some include both. From Cebu the same loop takes about 14 hours with the ferry.

What is the recommended itinerary for a Bohol countryside tour?

Start with the stops closest to Tagbilaran, eat lunch at Loboc around midday, then drive inland through the Bilar forest to the Chocolate Hills. Many tours run it the other way round to dodge the crowds.

The countryside sights sit on one road that climbs from the coast near Tagbilaran into the island's centre. Baclayon Church and the Blood Compact (Sandugo) shrine are on the coast, the tarsier sanctuary in Corella is a short drive inland, Loboc town is about 24 km from Tagbilaran (Bohol Provincial Tourism Office), and the Chocolate Hills Complex in Carmen is the far end of the loop, about 1.5 hours by road from Panglao.

Here is the classic order, with the time most listings give each stop:

StopWhereTime at the stopWhat you do
Blood Compact (Sandugo) shrineBool, Tagbilaran10 to 15 minPhotos at the bronze group that marks the March 1565 pact
Baclayon ChurchBaclayonAbout 30 minOne of the oldest churches in the Philippines, restored after the 2013 earthquake

Bilar man-made forestLoboc to Bilar road10 to 15 minA photo stop under rows of mahogany
Chocolate HillsCarmen30 to 60 minAbout 214 steps to the viewing deck

Optional stops slot in along the same road: the twin hanging bamboo bridge in Sevilla, a butterfly garden in Bilar, Loboc Church (reopened 16 May 2021), a cave or an ATV ride near the hills. Guides add them when time and weather allow, and the listing tells you which are planned.

How long is a Bohol countryside tour?

From Panglao, 6 to 10 hours depending on the tour; from Cebu, about 14 hours including the fast ferry both ways.

A typical day from Panglao: pickup from about 7:30 AM and back around 4:25 PM, about 9 hours including transfers, per the listing for the most booked countryside tour. The shortest options on this site run 6 to 7 hours, and the tour with a paddleboard session runs about 10 hours with Baclayon Church at the end of the day.

From Cebu the loop is the same, plus the sea. Pickup starts at 6:00 AM, the fast ferry leaves Cebu City at 7:00 and reaches Tagbilaran about two hours later, per the listing for the tour from Cebu City. It is a long day, with lunch on the river in the middle of it. Our Bohol from Cebu guide covers the ferry and the timing.

Where do you eat lunch on the countryside tour?

On the Loboc River. Most tours stop for the floating restaurant cruise, a buffet with live music, at about ₱1,200 per person per the listings, or let you eat at a riverside restaurant instead.

The cruise boards in Loboc town and drifts upriver past palms and bamboo for about an hour, with a buffet of Filipino dishes and a short song-and-dance show from local performers. Some tours include it (the tour with the river lunch, the Cebu day), others leave it as an option you pay in cash. If you would rather eat lighter, the riverside restaurants work fine and the guide keeps the same schedule.

River trips stop in bad weather. The Loboc Tourism Office paused all water activities from 4 February 2026 during Tropical Depression Basyang. Pauses like that are short, and the guide plans around them. Our Loboc River cruise guide explains the boats and the menu.

What are the top 10 tourist spots in Bohol?

The top five: the Chocolate Hills, the Philippine tarsier, the Loboc River, Alona Beach on Panglao and Balicasag Island. The countryside tour covers the first three in one day.

The full ten, grouped by the trip that takes you there:

Is 2 days enough in Bohol?

Two days covers the essentials: the countryside tour on day one, and dolphins, Balicasag and Virgin Island by boat on day two. Three or four days leave room for the beach.

A good 2-day itinerary for Bohol, based on Panglao:

  • Day 1, inland: the countryside tour. Pickup around 7:30 AM, the hills, the tarsiers, lunch on the Loboc River, back by late afternoon for sunset on Alona Beach.
  • Day 2, at sea: an early boat from Panglao to watch wild dolphins, snorkelling with turtles at Balicasag, then the Virgin Island sandbar. The dolphin and Balicasag trip meets at 6:00 AM on Danao Beach and lasts about 5.5 hours, so you have the afternoon free.

Do the land day first. If the sea is rough on day two, the boat trip can move, and you have already seen the hills. Coming over from Cebu for two days? Our Cebu guide shows how to fit the ferry in.

What is a good 4-day itinerary for Bohol?

Days one and two as above, then a day for the quieter east (Anda, or Jagna for calamay) and a slow last day on Panglao.

  • Day 1: countryside tour.
  • Day 2: dolphins, Balicasag and Virgin Island.
  • Day 3: the east coast. Anda has white-sand beaches and far fewer people, about 2.5 hours from Tagbilaran. On the way, stop in Jagna for calamay, the sticky rice sweet sold in coconut shells with a red band (Bohol Provincial Tourism Office).
  • Day 4: a beach morning on Panglao, a dive or a massage, and an evening flight from Bohol-Panglao International Airport.

Looking for quieter spots than the main loop? The Rajah Sikatuna Protected Landscape near Bilar covers 9,023 hectares of forest (Bohol Provincial Tourism Office), and Taytay Hills in Carmen gives a wide view over the countryside, good for a hike (Carmen tourism page, tourism.bohol.gov.ph). Our best time to visit guide covers where to stay and how many days to plan.
